Student Led Conferences

What a joy it has been to observe the Room 10 students leading the Student Led Conferences this week. They were well prepared, confident and very aware of their own learning goals and styles.

Congratulations Room 10 for a job well done!

Introducing the Pupuke Community of Learning to Sunnybrae through our Assembly

Room 10 and Room 6 joined forces to create a fun, informative and musical presentation about the Pupuke Community of Learning for their assembly.
Well done, Lily in the lead role as Mrs. Armitage and for all members of the class who contributed their commitment, patience and stage presence.

Advertising videos are a hit with Room 10!

Group-Based Advertisements
Unit of Inquiry: Communication

Room 10 students inquired into the different techniques used to persuade. They conceptualised an idea for an advertisement, created a storyboard, prepared props and locations, filmed and edited their ad and then reflected on their commitment to the process and their ability to work well in a group. Miss Oborn led the class through this challenging but very rewarding learning and we were all blown away by just how amazing the advertisements came out!

Bully -free environment

Last week was Bully-free week. Students from Sunnybrae wore pink to support this campaign.

A great New Zealand resource has been produced to support a bully-free environment called Oat the Goat.

Ethics around Pets

With the guidance of Miss Jane, Room 10 students considered the pros and cons of kindergartens having a pet. They learned about the term, ethics and made decisions about the rights and wrongs of homing a pet in a school. They ranked themselves based on how strongly the felt about the topic along a continuum.

Non Fiction Reading Strategies

Room 10 has been focusing on reading strategies that are particularly useful when reading non-fiction texts. Each group has been extending their knowledge of forms of communication by reading short texts and journal articles. The strategies they have been learning to apply are:

  • Skimming
  • Activating Prior Knowledge
  • Questioning
  • Building Vocabulary
  • Summarising
  • Synthesising

Here is a sample of a text and a reading strategy template

Diving assessment for Physical Education

Fancy turning up to the hall for a diving lesson! Well Room 10 didn't exactly dive but learned all about the sport of diving through New Zealand's national coach. They were put through their paces - stretching, jumping and balancing to prove that they had what it takes to make a great diver. After a lot of fun, the students received the opportunity to participate in a free diving lesson at Glenfield Pools.
